I don't understand why this library is not "trivially portable". If it isn't
already, I figure that's where efforts could be spent.
Especially if the focus would be to get something that (mostly) works for
curl, as that would rule out a lot of IDN and unicode functionality. It's not
doing very complicated things.
If someone would volunteer to rather provide the functionality built-in in
curl, I don't think I would be against it.
