Best I can do is report details.

This is an Oracle/Fujitsu SPARC64 server :

s$ uname -a
SunOS spartacus 5.11 11.3 sun4u sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise

The compiler tools being used are the Oracle Studio 12.6 stuff :

s$
s$ echo $PATH

My guess is that somewhere we have a 32-bit rat in the pile :

s$
s$ cat ./log/stderr831
ld.so.1: sed: fatal:
/opt/bw/build/curl-7.85.0_sunos5.10_sparcv9_sslv3.003/tests/libtest/.libs/libhostname.so:
wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
ld.so.1: sed: fatal:
/opt/bw/build/curl-7.85.0_sunos5.10_sparcv9_sslv3.003/tests/libtest/.libs/libhostname.so:
wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
../src/curl: error:
'/opt/bw/build/curl-7.85.0_sunos5.10_sparcv9_sslv3.003/tests/.libs/curl'
does not exist
This script is just a wrapper for curl.
See the libtool documentation for more information.
s$

That has me baffled.

Everything in test/libtest/.libs/ is a 64-bit ELF file. Everything.

Could this be due to some LD_LIBRARY_PATH thing that confused the system
runtime linker and borked up sed ?

s$
s$ which sed
/usr/xpg4/bin/sed
s$ file /usr/xpg4/bin/sed
/usr/xpg4/bin/sed: ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC32PLUS Version 1, V8+

available
s$

I will dig deeper and try out with GNU sed :

s$
s$ file /opt/bw/bin/sed
/opt/bw/bin/sed: ELF 64-bit MSB executable SPARCV9 Version 1,
dynamically linked, not stripped
s$
s$ /opt/bw/bin/sed --version
/opt/bw/bin/sed (GNU sed) 4.8
