I was not aware that it is unmaintained.

On systems using systemd-resolved, the preferred method of DNS
resolution is to contact systemd-resolved directly, either via the
D-Bus API or the newer Varlink API. I believe systemd-resolved
honors /etc/hosts. It doesn’t support machines registered with
systemd-machined, but that can be handled separately if needed.

macOS already expects that Network.framework be used as discussed
previously, and Windows has the asynchronous GetAddrInfoExW function.
