We were, until a couple of years ago, doing just that at $DAYJOB. Our
old embedded devices (running Linux) did not have the space or memory
for OpenSSL, or other SSL libraries, so we couldn't build curl with
HTTPS support or get an SSH client onto the device. It is out of service
now, and our new generation of devices do have OpenSSL, so we do not
build with HTTP only *any longer*.
