In my great wisdom I confused CURLOPT_HTTP_TRANSFER_DECODING with
CURLOPT_TRANSFER_ENCODING.
Maybe not the most cleverly named options we have. Anyway, I think the outcome
is that the fix is much simpler than what I first thought:
