/usr/local/{bin,man,doc,lib} is my preferred method, as it matches all the packages from SunFreeware.com. I build my own curl packages upon occasion (haven't since 7.4.something) for all the boxen I use. I have nice OpenSSL package definitions (0.9.6) that end up in /usr/local, if you want to investigate building a HAXXcurlssl setup.

I would prefer you build with -rpath in the linking, so that LD_LIBRARY_PATH doesn't need adjusted in any case.

(SunFreeware has a policy that if he doesn't build it, it can't go on the website. So, all my stuff is sitting on a Solaris box at work...)

Single pkgtrans is how I like it too. ;)

Good question - I prefer gzip, but that's because the first thing I do is add the gzip-local package to my Sol7 systems. :-) The age old Solaris problem, whether to be portable or be cool-n-smart. Can't have both. ;)

What compiler? I use gcc myself for damn near everything...
