Perhaps, if you want to use one of the protocols curl supports.

To quote the front web page: "Curl is a command line tool for transferring
files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET,
DICT, FILE and LDAP."
So yes, if one of those protocols are used, you can use curl.
