I appreciate all your help to the community, and since you are providing
so much support already, by no means too harsh. When I try this from a
Windows implementation using

    curl 7.12.0 (i386-pc-win32) libcurl/7.12.0 OpenSSL/0.9.7d zlib/1.2.1

I do not have the problem. Updating to latest curl on Linux not without
problems ...

I hope so. An alternative would be for me to install the latest curl
on my fedora Core 2 Linux box! ;-) However, when I try this, I end
up with so many dependencies for the rpms that when I eventually am
being told that the (old) ldap components that I am being asked to replace
(because ..., because ...) are needed by another 25 packages, I have
decided to stop and review the position! :-)

This is the very reason why I was trying to use "--trace" above! :-(
