Is there a way we can reproduce the problem in a not too complicated way?
Following that bug thread makes it really hard to understand even what the
sympthoms are and even less so what the source for the problem could be.

What HTTP/2 implementation is that server running?

If it indeed is HTTP/2 related, you can probably work around the issue by
insisting on sticking to 1.1 rather than downgrading the version.
