Ok, let's for now just be happy with mentioning CR LF, problems and cygwins
enough number of times in a few mails so that people will find these posting
using search engines in the future when they try to figure out what happens!

I think the mentioning on the cygwin download page should be enough, as this
is a highly cygwin-specific problem. For the people who are too lazy to click
on the link above, I'll quote it for you:
Note that you may be tempted to unpack the .tar.gz files with some Windows
program like WinZip. This will not work reliably. Cygwin's tar files are
not fully understood by WinZip. Attempting to use WinZip to unpack a
distribution will result in a damaged Cygwin installation.
