I'm not familiar with what restrictions lwip puts on the users but I've seen
other people in the past mentioning using libcurl successfully.

With that little conditional in mind, I would say that libcurl will
significantly simplify your effort as you'll get fully standards compliant
HTTPS capable POSTs (and more) with no basically no work more than building it
for your platform.
