Yes, I agree and understand the problem. Maybe go deeper in structures
and/or improve the orthogonality of the SSL handshake state in various
protocols/SSL backends...

I've seen SSL handshakes "blocking" the connection for more than 2
seconds, although this is not the regular case (fortunately!).
Please note that, by "SSL handshake", I mean everything between the
unencrypted and encrypted socket states: this includes the "SSL connect"
too.
