Well, that sorted it out completely. Turns out I was using 4.5.2 - I
can't believe I didn't think to upgrade before now. I downloaded the
new version of MinGW and then makefile worked just fine. Excellent!

Two follow-up questions:
Would you recommend copying the makefile and m32 file for use with my
own applications as well?

simple.c compiles to a 2.5 Mb file, even when I alter the makefile
options to set SSL, SSH2, ZLIB and so on to 0. Is this normal and is
there anything I can do to reduce the size of the final executable?
