I've just pushed a fix to remove PKG_CHECK_MODULES while still using
pkg-config as we already did for other libraries. Autobuilds will tell
if any further adjustment is yet required..

I'll read now rest of thread which has evolved while coding this
patch. I always code with email apps closed.
