Is there an established way of building curl as Universal Binary?

Why I need it:

I'm trying to implement the support for FTP with SSL/TLS. The version of
curl included with Mac OS 10.5 doesn't support it, while the one
included with 10.6 - does.

I want to support both systems.

Building curl as is creates only an Intel version (I tried both 7.19.7
and 7.21.4).

I did search on this subject and found various suggestions, but nothing
like a single straightforward way to do this.

I tried to run ./configure using these options:

env CFLAGS="-O -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk -arch i386 -arch
ppc7400 -arch ppc64" LDFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch ppc7400 -arch ppc64"
./configure --disable-dependency-tracking --prefix /curl-7.21.4-test

However, when I try to run make, it stops with this error:
