i overlooked the first message of the thread which contained "For OS400
(...), this change causes an "soname bump" and requires relinking of
all calling programs/libraries :-(". that recalled me being shoot by
debian release managers because i blindly pushed a major version soname
transition which was not required at all.

i sent the mail before having checked what happens to the linux build :(

please keep as good the considerations about the curl_easy_setopt()
and the Drepper's paper.

instead i am on the right way to step down from maintaining debian
packages, actually i am not familiar with curl's internal at all besides
having maintained it for more than 10 years. bugs continue to pile up
and i am not worried enough to iron them down.
