I see the following on the iteration after the sleep while running
under gdb. SIGPIPE is received for the first iteration after every
sleep.
Using a signal handler to ignore the SIGPIPE signal in the main
program prevents the crash and keep the program going, but I am
looking into see if I should handle this in a different way.
