Apparently OpenSSL doesn't like something in the handshake procedure,
presumably then involving your client cert. I figure you could ask on their
mailing list or dig into the OpenSSL source code to try to learn more on why
this happens.

It might of course just be a rather complicated way of telling that the
handshake failed due to the client cert not being OK somehow.
