Just a note: CMake has been designed as a "better autotools" ("CMake is a project that aims at being a replacement for the GNU Build System (Autoconf, Automake and friends)." - http://librenix.com/?inode=3769 ). It does not cover all autotools features yet (AFAIK), but maybe this will be in the future.
