Thanks for the build tips; I've switched to trying to adapt the build
scripts from the old debian source package, and I've got quite far,
just now stumbling over their hacks to create alternate gnutls
editions of the library. There's a patch that no longer applies to
the source files, and once I hack past that I think I might get a
useable build.

oh don't you just love package managers? their maintainers too, of course.
