That was probably more work than necessary--downloading wget from somewhere
would have been enough :^)

What does 'netstat -t' show while libcurl is attempting to connect to
the remote server? If that looks correct, then there's a good chance
that Daniel's suggestion about PORT vs. PASV, may be the one, although
ftplib defaults to PASV (like libcurl).
