I have worked on the difference betwen the way lib-curl and edtftpd-ssl work.I am sending the logs of wrapper to you may be you can get some information because i could not understand the terminology of FTP-SSL at all.
 
I am attaching the logs for both curl-lib scenario and edtftp-ssl's.
