What is the "wrapper" and does it really handle SSL-connections as it should?

As you can see from the trace dump, when curl connects the data connection
(which works) and then sends a chunk of SSL data (during the SSL
connection/negotiation), it never gets any response from the peer and then
times out the connection.

I don't know what edtssl is or what that client does. Does it even use an
encrypted data connection?
