At a previous job, we had a server that generated the downloadable file
when you issued the download command.
The FTP server in that case was not based on a filesystem, but instead
emulated one to the FTP client and got its data out of a database. The
data returned could also vary depending on what FTP command were sent
earlier (ie. if you issued the STRU R command for AS400 users, or asked
to have multiple files concatenated into one).
Our situation is a little unusual, though. In general, most normal
file-based FTP servers will report file size.
