It seems to be a nice tool and a perfect use for libcurl.

I hope they're talking about a HTTP proxy as libcurl doesn't (currently)
support any other kind of proxy. What happens? What OS? What curl version?

HTTP proxy tunneling is not generally an option to most users. Most HTTP
proxies are not setup to allow general tunneling-through of things such as
the full FTP protocol.

You have to specify what the problems are. Give us protocol outputs,
anything, that offer more clues to what is happening and what isn't.

I've personally used curl fetching ftp files with a squid proxy without

No, there's no SOCKS5 support in libcurl as the FAQ entry 2.4 clearly states.
It also says: "I would appriciate patches that brings this functionality."
and that is still valid.
