actually, you're totally right- was gcc- i needed to upgrade from gcc 3.1 to
3.3, which comes bundled with panther but for some reason was not working in
mine. you have to set it but the gcc-select command only allows you to set
to 3 (->3.1). There must be some other way but anyway- in case any one else
is having problems installing on panther, i thought i'd just post the
resolution. i downloaded Xcode and installed again.

This is a problem with your gcc on your system. This error is not
curl-related.
