First a dislaimer: I am not a PHP hacker.

Others have mentioned that this might be because how both libcurl and PHP use
OpenSSL so there's something to do with how both init OpenSSL that causes
this.

You could try to not compile PHP with SSL and only let libcurl build with it.
Others have reported success doing this work-around.

I'm sorry that I don't have more or better info on this.
