You really want the updated 1.1.1 version, not the first one. At least 1.1.1d.

curl 7.29.0 was released *five years* before OpenSSL 1.1.1 even shipped the 
first time, of course it didn't know what they would change.
I propose you upgrade to a modern curl version and then OpenSSL 1.1.1 is not a 
a problem!
