CURL (35) unknown SSL protocol error in connecting to host:443

This is my first post to curl.

I'm running Vista SP2

curl-7.19.5-win32-ssl

Win32OpenSSL_Light-0_9_8k

curl works fine for me when accessing http.

In some places the documentation seems to indicate the doing https is
"built-in" to curl. In others it seems to state that OpenSSL must be
installed.

I only need curl to do client https operations.

I'm troubled with what seems to be a requirement for a private certificate
to do https client retrievals. Client authenticated is not required.

According to the documentation I'm not sure WHERE curl expects the CA cert
bundle (in PEM format) to be - which directory?

I've verified the OpenSSL s_client works.

I've not verified if curl can call OpenSSL successfully.

I've begun using -trace, but have not been able to make the output go to a
file. Placing a file name following -trace does nothing I've been able to
detect.

Thanks for your advice, help.

David
