I think you want set cookie jar on the first connection:
  curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR, "/tmp/cookies.txt");

And cookie file on the second:
  curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE, "/tmp/cookies.txt");
