CURL and SFTP performances

Hi.

I'm using the curl library with its support for SFTP, with the help of the libSSH2 linked together with the libCURL.
I tried to do a big file transfer of about 35 megs, and the resulting transfer rate was quite slow, with a transfer time of about 3 minutes (more or less 200 KB/s). With the common sftp delivered by OpenSSH i transfer the same file in about 10 seconds (about 3 MB/s).
Is there something i'm forgetting (i.e. some CURL option that can be given before beginning the download operation) or some clues for this? Has anyone experienced a similar behavior?

Thanks and regards,
Antonio
