DNS via SOCKS?

Is there any way to get curl to not attempt local DNS lookups and
instead deliver the hostname to the socks server a-la SOCKS4A/SOCKS5?
I've tried --socks, --socks4, and --socks5 and all seem to try to do
DNS locally.
