Thanks for everyone's feedback. As it turns out SCO UNIX Release =
3.2v5.0.7, Maintenance Package 1 or greater includes curl, thus
eliminating the need to compile the curl source for SCO UNIX.
Installing the latest Maintenance Package resolved the original problem.
I hope this helps any other SCO UNIX users of curl.
