cURL hanging on mac os x 10.3.9

Downloaded source for curl 7.14.0
Compiled and installed with no errors
System is Mac OS X Panther 10.3.9
curl -V provides...
curl 7.14.0 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0) libcurl/7.14.0 OpenSSL/0.9.7b
zlib/1.1.4
Protocols: ftp gopher telnet dict ldap http file https ftps
Features: IPv6 Largefile NTLM SSL libz
Everything looks ok, but if I do a simple test like,
curl --url http://www.google.com
It just hangs and sits in the process list doing nothing.
Second Panther system, different network -> same problem.
Two earlier versions of curl -> same problem
Firewall down -> same problem
Anyone have any suggestions?
