I think this happens because curl is not doing data conversions correctly when
doing ASCII transfers. Or using the words of the docs/TODO:

  * FTP ASCII transfers do not follow RFC959. They don't convert the data
    accordingly.

I don't think there are any work-arounds for this, other than simply writing
the missing code.
