I was thinking of wget's ability to specify arbitrarily long intervals, but I think ten
minutes is reasonable. That would be long enough to allow an overloaded
site to settle down a bit before hitting it again. Your backoff is also geometric
though, whereas wget's is linear, so maybe I'm full of poo. :)
