cause of curl: (35) SSL: error:00000000:lib(0):func(0):reason(0)

Hi,
I've installed openssl 0.9.6 and curl-7.9.4 on redhat 7.1. I've tried
accessing an https site through:
curl https:www.somesite.net
but i get:
curl: (35) SSL: error:00000000:lib(0):func(0):reason(0)
Other https sites I can access just fine. What could be the reason?
