Summary: Cannot retrieve local directory

Initial Comment:
It is not possible to retrieve a local directory
listing. While the URL
ftp://site/ will retrieve the file list the URL
file:/// or file://localhost/ will not retrieve the
file list. Both curl and libcurl do not allow to
retrieve a local directory listing. Tested on curl (and
libcurl) version 7.9.2.
