That is a sensible approach, indeed.

This is/was a truely "un-knowing end-user" case, as we have/had no idea what
kind of proxy this is or if this configuration was due to a site-special
configuration or a built-in oddity.

It was also one of those bugs I didn't feel was very imporant to put a lot of
effort into (from my part), as curl worked fine once you figured out which
options to use (even though the docs didn't help much).

If anyone feels like taking this up from where I left it, by all means, go
ahead. Just because I dropped it and ran off chasing other ghosts doesn't
mean that it isn't a subject that could need some attention and possible
fixes. It just means that I had to prioritize other items.
