I've tried the "-v" flag and I get:

SENT WILL BINARY
SENT DO BINARY
SENT WILL SUPPRESS GO AHEAD
SENT DO SUPPRESS GO AHEAD
-------------------

and this is it all: then curl exits...

shouldn't I get stdin?

Telnet was pretty much improved in 7.7, so I'd suggest you upgrade.

Not really. I suggest you yry using the general purpose curl
answer-to-all-questions flag: -v.
