Well, you actually don't need to have root to install openssl. You can always
do it locally in your home directory or similar.

Then of course, I have no clue what "a Virtual Server from iServer" is.

It tells you that your default FreeBSD OpenSSL installation is inadequate.

To be honest, I've never had any problems with building OpenSSL (as far as I
can recall at least) - including every single protocol and crypto it
includes.

However, I suggest you scan the openssl site for docs, check out the FAQ
and/or try to find a FreeBSD guy that can explain the right moves (since the
http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/openssl.html site explains the source code is
already there for you, just not compiled and built).

This really isn't a curl issue.
