IMO you cannot fix breakage stemming from `--user` being too "clever" by adding more "cleverness" to it. as a user i would prefer a clean break from the status quo; i'd rather have my curl-based tools complain about unknown option if curl is too old rather than do unexpected things when they get the "right" inputs.
