libcurl error code 28 is actually defined as
"CURLE_OPERATION_TIMEOUTED ".

Both the man pages and website are wrong here.

I am using Ubuntu 12.05 and the "libcurl4-gnutls-dev"-package.
curl-config --version returns: libcurl 7.22.0

I see that both work now though. I must´ve misspelled
"CURLE_OPERATION_TIMEDOUT" (and thus thought the CURLE_OPERATION_TIMEOUTED
was the "new way").
Sorry.

    as requested, CURLE_OPERATION_TIMEDOUT is now the same as
    CURLE_OPERATION_TIMEOUTED

So it has existed for almost 10 years and we made that spelling the one
used "by default" back in 2007. I don't see where there is anything wrong.
