Are the versions of DarwinSSL and OpenSSL that ship with 10.5 of any use in 2019?

I'm trying to build curl on a PPC macOS 10.5 system and I'm wondering whether using the versions of DarwinSSL and OpenSSL that ship with 10.5 are still of use today or whether I should do a fresh build of a more recent OpenSSL version and use that instead.
The reason that makes me doubt the 2019-usefulness of 10.5's inhouse SSL stacks is the fact that when I open Safari and go to a https:// URL it immediately complains that the certificate couldn't be validated so I guess this is because of the fact that 10.5's versions of DarwinSSL and OpenSSL are very very outdated.
So I guess the best idea to use curl on a 10.5 system would be to link it against my own build of a recent OpenSSL version, right?
