OK, so your distribution's softhsm package needs to be fixed.

You would do better to test on Fedora where this stuff is expected to
Just Work. Port to Ubuntu later once you've got a better understanding
of it all, but don't *start* by fighting distro bugs on a distribution
where the crypto stuff is barely maintained.
