Question about curl CURLOPT_DEBUGFUNCTION example

Hello everyone.
I am sorry for the banal question
but I'm using in my code this example of CURLOPT_DEBUGFUNCTION

and I wondered why in the code the "dump" function use the hex char
OD and OA for comparisons and not the equivalent C code escape '\ r' and '\ n'.
There is probably something obvious but I can not give me a convincing
explanation. Could you help me?
