Are you using a recent enough version of c-ares? I can see that this feature is turned off[1] if c-ares < 1.7.4.

PS : for the record the CURL_VERSION_ASYNCHDNS flag is enabled when curl is built with c-ares (--enable-ares) *or* threaded resolver (--enable-threaded-resolver): see [2] and [3].
