We don't "need" it. We can help you debug this problem, but given your stack
trace it almost completely lacked details so that doesn't help a lot (I
suggest you also try running your code with valgrind). I've not yet even tried
to run your test code so I don't know if I can repeat it.

Does a normal curl command line download against this SFTP server cause a
crash as well?

Did you mention which libcurl and libssh2 versions you're using?
