I have done further investigation on the issue. Removed 4.1.24 and it
worked blazingly fast. Installed 4.2.10, slow again. Disabled host-only
adapted. Blazingly fast.

So a warning to anyone. VirtualBox's host-only adapter virtually
cripples DNS resolution at least for libcurl. I will have to open a
ticket at their Trac.
