Some tests I've done...

Forced libcurl to build using select() instead of poll() to rule out
any problem in that area. No joy, exhibits same behavior.

Used http test server sws.c rolled back to commit d759a70d and also
back to commit 4d3fb91f. But it exhibits same behavior.

And, given that without the 'always multi' patch tests succeed, it has
to be something closely related, or a sws.c weakness it uncovers.
